Sima Guang Breaks the Vat

During the Northern Song Dynasty, in Guangshan County of Henan Province, there lived a seven-year-old boy named Sima Guang. He was born into a family of scholars—his father, Sima Chi, was a local official.
Unlike other children who loved to play, young Sima Guang adored books. But he wasn’t a bookworm—he liked to use his brain and always thought one step ahead when facing problems.
One sunny spring day, after finishing his studies, Sima Guang ran to the courtyard to play with his friends. There stood a big green water vat, taller than the children themselves, filled with clear well water. It was used to cool the courtyard in summer.
“Who dares to climb up?” shouted a naughty child, pointing at the vat.
“I do!” Another child rolled up his sleeves, stepped on a stone, grabbed the rim with both hands, and pushed hard—Splash! He fell right into the water!
The vat was too deep. The child’s head barely stuck out above the water, his hands slapping desperately but finding no grip on the smooth walls. He opened his mouth to shout, but swallowed a mouthful of water instead, only managing “gurgle gurgle” sounds.
The other children panicked. Some covered their eyes and screamed. Some turned and ran to find adults. Some stood frozen, tears streaming down their faces. The courtyard was in chaos.
Sima Guang didn’t run. He quickly looked around—the vat was too high, the children too short to reach in and pull anyone out. Wait for adults? There wasn’t time! The child in the water was starting to sink.
Suddenly, Sima Guang spotted several big stones in the corner, used to hold flower pots. His eyes lit up. He rushed over and lifted the heaviest one with both hands.
“Sima Guang, what are you doing?” a crying child asked.
Sima Guang didn’t answer. Clenching his teeth, he raised the stone and threw it with all his strength at the vat—
“CRASH—!!!”
The vat cracked open with a big hole. Water gushed out like a waterfall. The child inside was washed out with the current, falling onto the wet ground, coughing up mouthfuls of water and gasping for air.
When adults rushed over, they found a broken vat, a flooded courtyard, and two soaking-wet children—one crying in fear, and one standing straight and tall. It was Sima Guang.
Later, Sima Guang became a famous statesman and historian of the Northern Song Dynasty. He spent nineteen years writing a historical masterpiece of over three million words called Zizhi Tongjian (“Comprehensive Mirror to Aid in Government”)—one of China’s most important history books.
But people always remembered that this great historian taught us something when he was just seven:
“Children were playing in the courtyard. One climbed the vat and fell into the water. All the others ran away. Guang picked up a stone and smashed the vat. The water burst out, and the child was saved.”
Don’t panic in danger. Stay calm and use your brain.
